Hawai‘i TESOL invites you to participate in our 2025 Language Experience event, and this year, we will be learning German. Magdalena (Lena) Petko, from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Hawaii English Language Program, will be leading us through a German language and culture lesson.

Lena is a teacher in the Hawaii English Language Program (HELP) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM). She holds a BA in Second Language Studies (SLS) and German and an MA in SLS from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM). Over the past five years, she has taught a range of college-level English courses at HELP, alongside short-term English courses for middle and high school students at Mid-Pacific Institute (MPI).

Throughout her career, she has focused on curriculum development, aiming to connect language learners with the local Hawaiian environment and its rich traditions. Her particular interests include place-based learning, heritage language learning, and effective vocabulary acquisition. As a native German, the German language and culture play a significant role in her life. She actively engages in heritage language education with her children, striving to enhance their language abilities through bilingual parenting. Outside the classroom, Lena enjoys hiking, swimming in the ocean, and cherishing moments with family and friends, often filled with laughter and joy.

We hope to see you there!
